Artist Statement by Robyn Gibbes
Bird photography is my way of listening to the wild. Each image becomes a quiet exchange between nature and lens—a fleeting moment of grace, colour, and motion. Through long exposures, I explore not only the presence of birds but the movement and energy that define them, tracing luminous arcs and gestures too swift for the eye.
My practice is rooted in patience and reverence. I wait for the story each bird reveals in its environment, seeking not just a perfect pose but a sense of character and spirit. Long exposures invite me to slow down even further, to witness the choreography of flight as a continuous gesture rather than a single instant. Whether it’s the poised elegance of an egret or the quick, vibrant flight of a rainbow bee‑eater, I aim to capture more than behaviour—I seek connection with the pulse of their world.
As many species face habitat loss and climate pressures, this work becomes a form of advocacy. I hope these images inspire wonder, curiosity, and a deeper commitment to protecting what is wild and fragile.
Ultimately, bird photography is my meditation. It teaches stillness, humility, and awe, reminding me that beauty often lives in quiet places and reveals itself when we are willing to slow down and truly see.
