For me the Barossa Valley at night is a place of quiet, darkness and peace. And yet, for a few months of every year, the vineyards and wineries become places of noise, light, colour and smell. The cellar doors however, remain dark and only lit by quiet lighting from within. Exploring the Valley with my camera during the nights of the Barossa Vintage, I searched for the lights that are only seen a couple of weeks a year.
During the Vintage season of February and March harvesters are out in the vineyards, picking grapes in the cool of the night. Wineries are flooded with light as vintage workers work through the night to crush, distil and ferment the grapes. The steel tanks reflect the lights, bringing colour and pattern to areas that remain dark and quiet during most nights of the year.
These images were taken through and over fences, from gates or roads, and through windows. These photographs provide a snapshot of the Barossa that is rarely seen by those visiting the Valley.
